East Greenwich Public Schools
Comprehensive Strategic Planning
East Greenwich, Rhode Island
When the East Greenwich Public Schools embarked upon a process to develop a School Facilities Strategic Plan, SBS was awarded a contract to assess the current conditions of the district’s six buildings, facilitate a process of identifying modern educational and community needs, and develop a plan for the renovation, expansion, and construction of space for the district. The East Greenwich Public Schools enroll approximately 2,400 students in two primary schools, two intermediate schools, one middle school and one high school. The district has received a number of state and federal academic awards in recent years, however, deferred maintenance issues have been raised by many in the schools and community.
During the summer and fall of 2006, SBS conducted a Facilities Conditions Assessment, Space Quantification & Utilization Analysis, and Program Modernization Planning Study. These components ultimately were compiled into a School Facilities Strategic Plan for the district. The inspections included a thorough analysis of the existing conditions of the district’s six buildings (approximately 350,000 gsf). The process also included engaging the School Committee, a Facilities Sub-Committee, School Administration, staff, and community members in a participatory process to garner support and input. SBS developed planning options and financial models for renovation and construction needs based on information identified through this process. SBS also supported the district in compiling an application for state funding as well as documentation for a town referendum.
