Easthampton High School
Easthampton, MA
The City of Easthampton’s High School facility was constructed in 1961 and serves approximately 520 students. The high school received lighting upgrades in 1996 and 2005, and a new roof and significant heating system improvements in 1999. In general, the building was structurally sound, but in need of extensive upgrades to meet the educational needs of its students.
Strategic Building Solutions was engaged by the City of Easthampton to serve as Owner’s Project Manager (OPM) during the feasibility study and schematic design phases for its Easthampton High School Project. In response to its submittal of a Statement of Interest, the Massachusetts School Building Authority has invited the City of Easthampton to move forward with the feasibility study to identify possible solutions to the problems facing the Easthampton High School. These issues include a lack of adequate classroom, laboratory, media, arts, guidance, office, library and storage spaces; leaks and cracks in various areas of the building; inadequate and inefficient HVAC facilities and controls; badly worn interior components including floors, stairs and gymnasium bleachers; inadequate electrical distribution capacity; and limited handicap accessibility.
Objectives for SBS in its role as OPM included: assisting the City of Easthampton in the selection of the most effective solution to the deficiencies identified in its Statement of Interest; the identification of a course of action that offers the lowest life cycle costs of operating the School, as it relates to future operational budgets, within the means of the community; and, providing a sufficiently detailed project summary in time for the submission of a Debt Exclusion question on the City’s November 2009 ballot.
