Facilities Strategic Plan
Amherst, MA
Hampshire College opened its doors to the first class of students nearly 30 years ago. As Hampshire prepared to educate the next 30 years of students, it became evident that numerous maintenance needs and necessary regulatory compliance updates had accumulated throughout the College’s 67 buildings. Almost all of the College’s major campus buildings were between 20 and 30 years old, an age that represented a threshold during which many major building components reach or surpass their useful life cycles.
As Hampshire College and its Academic, Residential and Support functions evolved, the facilities that house these programs were not always modified to accommodate them. As a result, many of the building spaces no longer ideally suited today’s programs. To fully understand and properly address this accumulation of facilities maintenance and regulatory compliance needs, as well as to recognize the need to modernize and expand many campus spaces, Hampshire undertook a comprehensive facilities strategic planning process. The College engaged SBS to supplement the ongoing efforts of the Physical Plant Department with the provision of technical and analytical assistance in the development of a Facilities Strategic Plan.
Only through the full recognition and integration of the various facilities needs can limited dollars be best directed. With this concept in mind, a comprehensive planning process was undertaken which included four distinct, yet inter-related components:
- Facilities Conditions Assessment
- Program Modernization and Space
- Campus Infrastructure Analysis
- Campus Enrollment Planning
